Description

Instituted June 1, 1874. In silver, full size, rim officially engraved 876. QR. MR. SERJT. W. DYER. 2 BN. RIFLE. BDE. 1873-4. , on swivel suspension with COOMASSIE clasp, edge knocks and light scratches, remains very fine.

Footnote: William Dyer, of the 2nd Battalion Regiment of the Rifle Brigade is on the medal roll for the Ashantee Medal. He was discharged in 1879.

The 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own) served with distinction during the Ashantee War of 1873–74, as part of the British expeditionary force under Sir Garnet Wolseley. Deployed to the Gold Coast, the battalion played a key role in the advance through dense jungle terrain toward the Ashanti capital, Coomassie. Notably engaged in the Battle of Amoaful and subsequent actions, the battalion demonstrated the effectiveness of its light infantry training in challenging conditions. For their service, many of its members were awarded the Ashantee Medal with the "Coomassie" clasp.
