Footnote: Albert Edward Hutchinson was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba in June 1896. He was employed as a farmer when he enlisted for war on March 15 1916 with the 181st Overseas Battalion. He travelled from Halifax to England via the SS Grampian in April 1917. In June 1917, he was transferred to the 44th Battalion. In May 1918, he was granded a good conduct badge. 

On August 11, 1918, Hutchinson suffered a gunshot wound while serving at Amiens, to the right hand and arm, resulting in partial amputation of the 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers. He was admitted to the 2nd Canadian General Hospital in Le Treport. He was considered invalided and was discharged back to Canada in January 1919. 

In August 1918, the 44th Battalion was part of the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division, fighting in France and Flanders. The Battalion was participating in the Battle of Amiens on August 8th - a pivotal battle in the Hundred Days Offensive.
