A British War Medal, silver, full size, rim impressed 441628 PTE. A. BURBERRY 14-CAN.INF., original ribbon, lovely patina, extremely fine.
A Victory Medal, bronze gilt, full size, rim impressed 441628 PTE. A. BURBERRY 14-CAN.INF., original ribbon, gilt wear evident, near extremely fine.
A 53rd Infantry Battalion Cap Badge, in blackened copper, lugs intact on reverse, measures 35.7 mm (w) x 38.0 mm (h), extremely fine.
Footnote: Albert Burberry was born in Surrey, England in August 1895. At the time of his enlistment in August 1915, he was employed as a butcher and named his grandmother, Martha Humphrey to be his next of kin.
He sailed to England in April of 1916, and embarked for France on June 8. He was taken on strength in June of 1916 with the 14th infantry. On July 7, he was admitted to the Military Hospital in Bagthrope for 12 days in 1916.
The records state: “G.S.W L. Forearm. Admitted direct from E.F. France, wounded by shrapnel at Ypres about June 26, 1916 and nearly healed. Large septic wound with tube passing thro’ centre of upper third of L. forearm, discharge very foul; radius fractured. Symptoms of acute sepsis commenced on 8.7.19 with acute diarrhrea [sic]. This ceased in 2 days & was followed by frequent vomiting of dark grumous fluid containing blood cells in excell, & this continued to his death on 14.7.16 at 1.15am.”
