Lippe-Detmold, Principality. A Leopold Order, Ii Class Cross, C.1916

(Leopold Orden). Instituted Prince Leopold IV in 1906. Type III (1916-1918). In silver, a Maltese cross with purple enamelled arms and ball finials, between each arm is a large silver monogrammed L, the obverse medallion presents a large silver rose with five petals and in the center sits a handpainted blue swallow standing on a golden star on a red enamelled field, surrounded by the inscription FIDELITER SINE TIMORE 1906 (Loyal Without Fear), the badge is surmounted by a large silver crown, the reverse presents a single vertical pin assembly with crowned L monogram in the center, measures 46.8mm (w) x 69.5mm (h- inclusive of crown suspension), weighs 25.7 grams, enamel repairs visible on the 12 o’clock arm, dark patina, a very rare badge in near extremely fine condition.

Footnote: The Leopold Order was founded by Prince Leopold IV in 1906, and was conferred upon individuals, regardless of rank or nationality, who rendered meritorious service to the sovereign and state. In 1916, the order’s purpose was extended so that the decorations could serve as a reminder of the ascension of the Lippe-Biesterfeld line to the head of the House of Lippe. A total of 17 II Class Crosses were awarded before the Order became obsolete in 1918.
