(Orden of May). Instituted May 23, 1946. 1946-1957 Issue. A silver Grand Cross badge, composed of an eight point star of smooth rays, the central medallion features a right facing male portrait with holding a flag, surrounded by a red enamelled ring inscribed AL MERITO (FOR MERIT), with a thirteen point star encircling the medallion, the reverse medallion features the partially enamelled Argentinian coat of arms on a silver field, with a thirteen point star encircling the medallion, measures 77.3mm (w) x 82.6mm (h – inclusive of medallion), weighs 73.6 grams, enamels intact, lovely silver patina, in very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of May was originally established as the Order of May for Merit in 1946. It was founded to commemorate the May Revolution of 1811 that resulted in the establishment of Argentina as an independent republic. The Order was re-established as the Order of May on December 17, 1957 by Juan Perón, and it was modified on April 10, 1958. The Order of May is conferred upon foreign citizens and military personnel in recognition of a variety of meritorious contributions to Argentina.
