Description
Description
Hardcover, maroon cloth cover, with dust jacket, entitled "Boer War Tribute Medals" by M.G. "Bill" Hibbard, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Fellow of the South African Numismatic Society, copyrighted by the author in 1982, colour photography by Gerland Hobermanm, Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society of London, published by Constantia Classics Publications of Sandton, South Africa, in May 1982, Standard Edition of which is limited to 1500 copies (numbered 210 to 1700 of which this copy is number "1429"), printed and bound by Everton Book Press (Printing) Limited of Johannesburg, ISBN 0 620 05871 4. As stated on the dust jacket: "Breaking entirely new ground this book introduces an aspect of military medal collecting largely ignored by all but the initiated few. It is the only reference ever to be published about Boer War tribute medals and will remain the definitive work on the subject for many years to come. Enjoying wide international co-operation the author has drawn together a history and record of all known tribute medals awarded by grateful towns and villages throughout the British Isles and the Dominions to their volunteer soldiers returning home from the Boer War. All the medals described in this volume are illustrated in full colour except for a few specimens not available to the author, where black and white photographs were supplied from abroad. Many of these medals are unknown to the collecting world and the colour reproductions and meticulously researched text makes the book the only important reference to an unusual aspect of Boer War Numismatics. The comprehensive appendices, where many medal rolls are published, for the first time in their rightful context, is another useful feature of this book." Tribute medals were private awards to "local" units and servicemen who served in Cape Colony, Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal. It begins with a List of Contents, an Acknowledgement of Illustrations, an Acknowledgements, a Preface and an Introduction. It is divided into eleven chapters: I - England (Preface, Barnsley, Bedale, Bewdley, Birmingham, Blackpool, Brifgnorth, Burnley, Clitheroe, Cornwall, Derby, Doncaster, Durham, Hammersmith, Harrogate, London (Civ), Melton Mowbray, Northwich, Norton, Norwich, Osset, Portsmouth, Ratby, Stafford, Ston Easton, Suffolk, Willesden, Winsford, Worcester, Worksop, Worsley, Yorkshire); II - Ireland (Preface, Coleraine, Dublin, Londonderry); III - Scotland (Preface, Alloa, Annan, Arbroath, Ardrishaig, Campbelton, Dundee, Duns, Glenkens, Greenock, Hawick, Kirkcudbright, Leith, Patrick, Renfrew, Selkirk, Stewarton, Uncertain Provenance, Other Centres Issuing Medals); IV - Wales (Preface, Merthyr Tydfil, Montgomeryshire); V - South Africa (Preface, Kimberley Medal, Kimberley Star, Gold Kimberley Star, O'Okiep); VI - Australia (Preface, Ararat, Blackburn, Henty, Molong, South Yarra, Other Centres); VII - New Zealand (Waverley); VIII - Canada (preface, Toronto); IX - Institutions, Societies, Works & Clubs (Belfast YMCA, Haworth Conservative Club, Incorporated Law Society, London Hospital, National Fire Brigades Union, Portland Hospital, St. Andrews' Ambulance Association, Stawell, Thistle Works Paisley); X - Regimental Awards (Preface, 4th Vol. Bn. Gordon Highlanders, 5th Vol. Bn. Manchester Regiment, 2nd Vol. Bn. South Lancashire Regiment); XI - Special Group (St. Johns' Ambulance Brigade). It concludes with thirteen Appendices, a Bibliography and an eleven page Index. The book contains 300 pages of text and charts, along with being illustrated with multiple photographs, most of which are in colour, printed in four colour inks on a satin-finished white paper stock, measuring 215 mm (w) x 266 mm (h) x 26 mm (d). It exhibits foxing on the top of the pages, along with light scuffing on the dust jacket, the pages remaining pristine. Near extremely fine.
