Description
Hardcover, steel blue cloth cover, with dust jacket illustrating a collage of medals from the Spink collection, entitled "British Battles & Medals" by E.C. Joslin, A.R. Litherland and B.T. Simpkin, published by Spink & Son Limited of London in 1988, designed by Paul Sharp, photoset by Grillford Limited of Bletchley, printed by Pardy & Son Printers Limited of Ringwood, ISBN 0 907605 25 7. The dust jacket gives a brief analysis of the book: "A description of every Campaign Medal and Bar awarded since the Armada. This new edition describes each medal numismatically giving details of obverse, reverse, size, bar, etc. It includes the names of all the ships, regiments and squadrons present, with historical background for each campaign.", along with brief biographies of the three authors. It begins with a List of Contents, followed by a Preface by J.M.A.Tamplin, an Introduction by the Editors and a List of Acknowledgements. The majority of the book focuses on Campaign Medals from 1588 to 1982, which are listed in Chronological Order, illustrated through the use of black and white photographs, a few with line drawings where the medals themselves were not readily available due to scarceness. This is followed by the Polar Medals, the United Nations Medals, Indian Army Ranks and British Equivalents, a List of Regiments and Corps as of 1987, Precedence of Corps and Infantry Regiments, and a List of Cavalry and Infantry Regiments of the British Army. It concludes with a Bibliography, an Index of the Medals and an Index of the Bars. The book contains 308 pages, printed in black ink, and incorporating six colour plates, pages ii-iii with a reproduced painting of the Charge of the Scots Greys at Waterloo, plus four colour plates illustrating medal ribbons inserted between pages 272-273, on a satin-finished white paper stock, measuring 240 mm (w) x 312 mm (h) x 25 mm (d). The dust jacket exhibits sunning on the spine along with edge wear, however, the pages and cover of the book remain pristine. A valuable resource book for the collector of British medals. Near extremely fine.
