Description
1. A Cuban medal bar, the decorated gilt suspension bar measuring 112.3 mm in length, featuring the inscription “Libertad” between two stars beneath a pair of wings surmounted by a Phrygian cap bearing a star, mounted with two medals consisting of:
(Medalla al Mérito de las Fuerzas Armadas) bronze gilt, the obverse displaying military attributes including a cannon, anchor, and weapons, the reverse dated “4 SEPT. 1933” within a wreath, suspended from a striped ribbon in blue, white, orange, yellow, and green, measuring 35.3 mm x 39.8 mm inclusive of suspension device.
(Medalla de la Reconciliación Nacional) bronze gilt, the obverse featuring clasped hands beneath a radiant rising sun with the inscription “5 SEPTIEMBRE DIA PATRIA ORDEN JUSTICIA”, the reverse displaying a five-pointed star surrounded by the inscription “A LA PERPETUIDAD DEL 4 DE SEPTIEMBRE”, suspended from a matching striped ribbon with bronze star device, measuring 35.3 mm x 39.9 mm inclusive of suspension device.
2. (Medalla Combatiente Internacionalista) bronze, the obverse depicting the outline of Cuba with a waving Cuban flag and upward-pointing arrows surrounded by the inscription “POR VUESTRA LIBERTAD Y NUESTRA”, the reverse inscribed “COMBATIENTE INTERNACIONALISTA ESPAÑA 1936 1939”, measuring approximately 33.9 mm x 38.8 mm inclusive of suspension device.
All items are in fine to very fine condition, with expected wear, oxidation, and age toning to the finishes and ribbons.
Footnote: The September 4, 1933 medals commemorate the “Revolt of the Sergeants” in Cuba, a military uprising that played a decisive role in the collapse of the Céspedes government and the emergence of Fulgencio Batista as a dominant political figure. The symbolism of liberty, patria, order, and justice reflected the revolutionary rhetoric of the movement. The Combatiente Internacionalista medal commemorates Cuban volunteers and internationalist participants connected to the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, honoring those who fought in support of the Spanish Republic and the International Brigades.
