In bronze gilt, obverse illustrating a figure of Liberty on the left holding an unsheathed sword in her right hand and a shield in her left hand, soldiers to the right about to enter battle, with ships and airplanes above symbolic of the other branches of the service, framed by clusters of oak leaves, a blank name plate above the dates ""1917-1918"" at the base, reverse inscribed ""PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY TO ITS CITIZENS WHO SERVED IN THE WORLD WAR"", flanked by laurel branches on either side, the State of New Jersey coat-of-arms below, measuring 36.3 mm, original ribbon suspended from a pinback hanger inscribed ""NEW JERSEY"", light contact and gilt wear, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The New Jersey World War Medal was awarded to all citizens of the State who served during the First World War. This included volunteers, draftees and federalized members of the National Guard. It was also provided to the next-of-kin of those who died while in service. New Jersey provided approximately 110,000 men during the First World War. Bastian Brothers Company of Rochester, New York manufactured the medal.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
