Instituted in 1908. The obverse inscription reads SPANISH CAMPAIGN 1898, the reverse bears an eagle perched upon an anchor with a chain, above the words FOR SERVICE, inscribed above the eagle is UNITED STATES NAVY, engraved BENJAMIN F. SILSBY U.S.S. DOLPHIN 5306, on original striped ribbon, very fine condition.
Footnote: The Navy version of the Spanish Campaign Medal was instituted on 27 June 1908 and issued to any man of either the Navy or Marine Corps who had served in Cuban, Puerto Rican, or Philippine waters between 21 April and 16 August 1898 on select ships. For service in the West Indies, the Navy awarded the West Indies Campaign Medal as well as the Sampson Medal. This medal was awarded to Benjamin F. Silsby; he was also awarded the Sampson Medal.
