The obverse bears a Roman sword hanging on a tablet with the inscription FOR SERVICE IN THE SPANISH WAR, surrounded by a wreath, the reverse bears an eagle above the words FOR SERVICE, the upper contour of the medal bears the words UNITED STATES ARMY, on original ribbon in emerald green with one yellow stripe, 30 mm, very fine condition.
Footnote: The Spanish War Service Medal was established by an act of the U.S. Congress on 9 July 1918. The medal recognizes those members of the Army who performed active duty during the Spanish-American War, but did not qualify for the Spanish Campaign Medal
2.A Mexican Border Service Medal. The obverse bearing a Roman sword hanging on a tablet with the inscription FOR SERVICE ON THE MEXICAN BORDER, surrounded by a wreath, the reverse bearing the coat of arms of the United States over a scroll, surrounded by a wreath with the insignia of the Infantry at left, Artillery at the bottom and Cavalry at right, numbered 1062 on the edge, on original ribbon in emerald green with one yellow stripe, 30 mm, very fine condition.
Footnote: The Mexican Border Service Medal was authorized by Act of Congress on July 9, 1918. The Bronze Medal was initially awarded to National Guard troops, who were ineligible for the award of the Mexican Service Medal, in recognition of federalized service during the Mexican War. The award was later extended to Army and National Guard personnel for service provided between May 9, 1916, and March 24, 1917, or for service with the Mexican Border Patrol between January 1, 1916, and April 6, 1917.
