United States. The Society of the Cincinnati Eagle Medal. The Bailey, Banks & Biddle/A.M Ross Jenkintown Tilghman Eagle. (Modern). A finely manufactured left facing Gold Eagle featuring diagonally etched outstretched wings and white enamelled body with hand painted details, the rounded head features a strong downcurved beak, eye and hard hooded brow and three representational feathers, the neck is decorated rounded scale-like designs with a small central vertical line in each one, the tail presents five vertical lines with wishbone details denoting feathers, beneath the feet and on each side of the tail features a thin laurel branch with three green enamelled leaves at each end, the whole head is surrounded by a green and red enamelled wreath connecting with the base of the neck and shoulder of each wing, surmounted by a smaller integral wreath suspension loop, and oval shaped loose French double barrelled ring, obverse centre presents a deep blue medallion with golden figures illustrating two senators presenting a sword to Cincinnatus standing on a green enamelled base, in a white surround the hand painted motto OMNIA RELINQT SERVARE REMPB (He abandoned everything to serve his country) beginning at 6 o’clock, centre reverse medallion also in deep blue and green enamel with the Gold figure of Cincinnatus standing alone amongst a house and plow, in a white surround with the hand painted motto VIRT. PRAEM. SOCI. CIN. RUM. INST. A.D. 1783 (Reward of virtue, society of the Cincinnati, instituted 1783) beginning at 10 o’clock, measures 25.03mm (w) x 39.44mm (h – inclusive of integral wreath suspension), weighs 22.5 grams (inclusive of ribbon), enamels entirely intact, very minor contact, in extremely fine condition.
Worn on a society ribbon with a split wrap brooch and horizontal pin, connected to the badge via a pinch & slide clasp, slightly discoloured, very fine condition.
The Bailey, Banks & Biddle Tilghman Eagle (Philadelphia – Jenkintown) is identified in “The Insignia of The Society of the Cincinnati” by Minor Meyers, Jr on page 111, as the 76th eagle.
