Base in gilded browning brass, with the individual numerals "4" and "5" in white metal mounted to the base and located above the shield, voided, maker marked "J.R. GAUNT MONTREAL" on the reverse, measuring 43 mm (w) x 44 mm (h), both lugs intact, light contact, scattered gilt wear, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The 45th West Durham Battalion of Infantry was organized with headquarters at Bowmanville and four companies in Bowmanville, Orono, Cartwright and Newcastle respectively. Three independent companies in Lindsay, Omemee and Bobcaygeon soon died off. It was re-designated as The 45th Victoria Regiment on May 8, 1900, then re-designated at The 45th Victoria and Halliburton Regiment on July 16, 1914. After the First World War, it was re-designated as The Victoria and Halliburton Regiment on March 15, 1920.
