A Queen’s Sudan Medal, silver, full size, rim officially engraved 246 PTE. W. MITCHELL. 2/R. BDE:, replacement ribbon with adhesive on the reverse, light wear and several scratches to the obverse, remains in very fine condition.
Khedive’s Sudan Medal, silver, full size, with KHARTOUM clasp, light contact mark around edges, in very fine condition.
A Queen’s South Africa Medal, silver, full size, rim officially impressed 246 PTE F. MITCHELL . RIFLE BRIGADE., including a DEFENCE OF LADYSMITH clasp on replacement ribbon with adhesive on the back, dark patina around edges, light wear, in very fine condition.
A British War Medal, silver, full size, rim impressed 451769 PTE. F. MITCHELL. 58-CAN INF., replacement ribbon with adhesive on reverse, light contact, extremely fine.
A Victory Medal, bronze gilt, full size, rim impressed 451769 PTE. F. MITCHELL. 58-CAN INF., replacement ribbon with adhesive on reverse, light wear, extremely fine.
A 58th Infantry Cap Badge, browning brass, two lugs on reverse, measures 35.4 mm (w) x 38.1 mm (h), extremely fine.
Two 58th Infantry Collar Badges, in browning brass, two lugs on the reverse, measures 28.4 mm (w) x 31.5 mm (h), each extremely fine.
A 58th Infantry pin, in bronze gilt, a horizontal pin on the reverse, measures 27.9 mm (w) x 31.1 mm (h), small mark on the left side, very fine.
Footnote: Frederick Mitchell was born in London, England, in March 1876. He served with the Rifle Brigade for 13 years, including in Sudan and South Africa. The Rifle brigade was an infantry rifle regiment of the British army, and was deployed to South Africa in 1899. Mitchell was present at the Defence of Ladysmith, which occurred between November 3 1899 and February 28 1900.
Mitchell was residing in Toronto Canada and working as a night porter when he enlisted for the Great War in June 1915 at Niagara. He sailed from Halifax to England via the SS Saxonia in November 1915. Although his medals state private, he was shown as and approved as a corporal in July 1915, and to be a prov. sergeant in August 1915.
Mitchell arrived in France with the 58th battalion in February 1916. He was transferred to the 3rd Canadian Division Headquarters in March and filled a vacancy as a batman (a soldier-servant assigned to an officer). His records once again state ‘pte’ at this time.
In February 1919, he proceeded back to England, and sailed home to his Wife, Adelaide, in Canada, the following month.
