A 1914-15 Star, bronze plated, full size, reverse impressed N. SISTER R. GOURLAY. CAN:A.M.C., original ribbon, very fine.
A British War Medal, silver plated, full size, rim impressed N. SISTER R. GOURLAY., original ribbon, light contact, extremely fine.
A Victory Medal, bronze gilt, full size, rim impressed N. SISTER R. GOURLAY., original ribbon, light wear, extremely fine.
A Canadian Medical Corps Cap Badge, in browning copper, two lugs on reverse and inclusive of pin, measures 32.2 mm (w) x 42.0 mm (h), dark patina, very fine.
Footnote: Roberta Gourlay was born in Eganville, Ontario on March 19, 1890. She enlisted in the war on April 22, 1915 in Montreal as a nurse with the CAMC. She sailed to England early May 1915 and was attached to No. 9 General Hospital. She was taken on strength by the 3 Canadian General Hospital in Camiers at the end of July 1915. By that December, she proceeded to the Military Hospital at Shorncliffe.
Gourlay arrived in Boulogne, France from England in February 1916. From November 11, 1916 until December 8, she was granted leave. From August 11 1917 to August 25 1917 she was granted special leave. On May 3, 1918, she was posted to the C.A.M.C Depot in Shornecliffe. The was taken on strength on May 27, 1918 by the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital. She was hospitalized in November 1918 for influenza, debility in December, and was discharged back to Canada in mid January 1919 after being diagnosed with chronic laryngitis. Once home, she received a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in February.
In December 1920, Gourlay married Henry Miles Powell. She died in May of 1947.
