Footnote: James Henry Ottmann was born on August 7, 1893 in Glanford Township, Ontario. He was a resident of Bartonville, Ontario when he was conscripted, signing his Particulars of Recruit Drafted Under Military Service Act 1917 Paper as a Gunner (3108340), Military Service Act (numbered BC 812311), with the 69th Depot Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, 1st Depot Battalion, Artillery Brigade, Central Ontario Regiment, at No. 2 Military District in Toronto, Ontario, on March 8, 1918, at the age of 24, naming his next-of-kin as his father, Andrew N. Ottmann of Bartonville, stating that he had been with an Active Militia, two years with the 91st Regiment Canadian Highlanders, that he was Single, that his religion was Methodist and that his trade was that of Bank Clerk. He had previously had his medical examination at Hamilton on September 21, 1917. Forty-seven days later, on April 24, 1918, Ottmann was discharged from service at Exhibition Camp in Toronto, in order to join the Royal Air Force as a Cadet, by District Orders of April 23rd, his conduct and character noted as "good". He is confirmed on the First World War muster roll of the Royal Air Force and survived the conflict.
