A Memorial Cross, in silver, measures 32.4mm (w) x 35.1mm (h – inclusive of integral ring), reverse engraved B149285 PTE. G.J. PATTERSON, reverse marked LACKIE STERLING, worn on full length purple neck ribbon, oxidation and contact marks to obverse, remains in extremely fine condition.
1939-45 Star, bronze gilt, full size, reverse plain, small contact marks and cleaner residue remains on obverse, accompanied by the original ribbon and contained in original box, in very fine condition.
France and Germany Star, bronze gilt, full size, reverse plain, minor contact marks, cleaner residue on obverse, accompanied by the original ribbon and contained in original box, in very fine condition. War Medal 1939-45, silver, full size, oxidation on obvers and reverse, minor contact marks, accompanied by the original ribbon and contained in original box, in very fine condition.
Canadian Overseas Service Medal with Bar, in silver, full size, worn on original ribbon and accompanied by original box, dark patina on medal, minor contact, in very fine condition.
Footnote: Gordon J. Patterson was born on April 12, 1925 to John and Edith Patterson of Dundas, Ontario. Prior to serving in the army, Patterson worked on his father’s farm as a labourer and spent one year driving a truck for a coal company. He enlisted on July 15, 1943 and was considered physically fit on all fronts, however suffered from ‘restricted ability’ and was therefore recommended to be assigned to routine duties and simple tasks within the Infantry as a non-tradesman. He completed his infantry training in May 1944, and served with the 102nd Field Battery, R.C.A. He later served with the South Saskatchewan Regiment, R.C.I.C. Patterson was at first considered missing in action however, it was soon after discovered he was killed in action in France on October 14, 1944. He is buried at the Roosendaal Municipality Cemetery in Bergen Op Zoom.
