Footnote: Wilfred Henry Cashman was born on August 21, 1883 in Calcutta, India. He signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (800180) with the 134th Infantry Battalion "48th Highlanders", on February 14, 1916 in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 32, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Jessie Cashman of Calcutta, stating that he had five months' previous service with the 48th Highlanders, that he was not married, that his religion was Methodist and that his trade was that of Clerk. As of August 1, 1916, it was noted that his father was deceased. The 134th Infantry Battalion was raised and mobilized in Toronto, Ontario under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed August 8, 1916 from Halifax, Nova Scotia aboard the S.S. Scotian, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel A.A. Miller with a strength of 32 officers and 1,078 other ranks, arriving in Liverpool, England on the 19th. In England, the Battalion was absorbed into the 12th Reserve Battalion. Nine moths after arriving in England, Private Cashman was transferred to the 19th Infantry Battalion for service in the French theatre on May 23, 1917. He was taken on strength of the 19th Infantry Battalion in France on May 25th, leaving for his new unit on June 11th, arriving with them in the field on June 12th. He was admitted to hospital "sick" on July 7, 1917 and rejoined the 19th Infantry Battalion on the 9th, with no notation as to what he was sick with in his records. Private Cashman was hospitalized for a second time, as he was admitted to No. 6 Canadian Field Ambulance on December 14, 1917, where he was diagnosed with "Myalgia" (muscle pain, a symptom of many diseases and disorders). After four days at No. 6 CFA, he was transferred and admitted to No. 12 Canadian Field Ambulance on the 18th, where he was admitted with "P.U.O." (Pyrexia of Unknown Origin = fever) and posted to the Canadian Corps Regimental Section the same day. His stay at No. 12 CFA would entail five days, to allow his fever to subside. He was then discharged and returned to duty with the 19th Infantry Battalion on December 23, 1917. Upon the ceasing of hostilities, he proceeded to England on April 5, 1919, where he was posted to "O" Wing at the Canadian Concentration Camp for return to Canada on the 6th. He was struck off strength of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada on May 13, 1919 and sailed for Canada from Liverpool aboard the S.S. Caronia on May 14th, arriving in Canada on the 21st. Private Wilfred Henry Cashman, 19th Infantry Battalion, 134th Infantry Battalion was discharged upon demobilization at No. 2 District Depot in Toronto, on May 24, 1919, credited with having served in Canada, England and France, entitled to wear the War Service Badge, Class "A". number 212025. He died on May 24, 1942, at the age of 58 and is buried in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Toronto Municipality, Ontario, Section 7 Lot 5559. His grave marker is inscribed "19th Bn C.E.F. / Pte WILFRED CASHMAN / 1883-1942".
