A British War Medal, silver, full size, rim impressed 603246 PTE. E. RIGGALL. 14-CAN. INF., original ribbon, brown lacquer on the obverse and reverse, scratches present, near very fine.
A Victory Medal, bronze gilt, full size, rim impressed 622066 L. CPL. L. CLARKE. 44-CAN. INF., original ribbon, lacquered, light wear, very fine.
A 34th Infantry Battalion Cap Badge, in browning copper, two lugs on reverse, measures 35.8 mm (w) x 38.1mm (h), dark patina, extremely fine.
Footnote: Edward Riggall was born in Spaulding County, England on December 18, 1890. He enlisted on September 8, 1915 at Mitchell.
He left for England in April 1916, and began serving in the field with the 14th Battalion in early May 1916. Between June 12 - 13 1916, Riggall was reported killed in action. He is commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
In June 1916, the 14th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment) was stationed on the Western Front in the Ypres Salient, Belgium, as part of the 3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st Canadian Division. Early in the month, the battalion took part in the Battle of Mount Sorrel (June 2–13), a fierce German assault aimed at capturing key high ground near Ypres, including Hill 60 and the Menin Road. The 14th played a defensive role, helping to repel enemy attacks and hold strategic positions.
