Hardcover, hunter green cloth cover, entitled "The Eighty-Fifth Canadian Infantry Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders in France and Flanders", the text and regimental insignia embossed in gold-coloured ink on the front cover, copyrighted by the author, Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Hayes, DSO, CAMC in 1920, printed and bound by Royal Print & Litho Limited of Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1920. It begins with a List of Contents, followed by a List of Illustrations, a Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur William Currie, GCMG, KCB, an Author's Preface by Hayes, and an Introduction by Lieutenant-Colonel James Layton Ralston, CMC, DSO. It is divided into thirteen chapters: I - Organization and Early Training; II - From Witley Camp to Vimy Ridge; III - Vimy Ridge; IV - From Vimy to Passchendaele. Electric Light Station, Ontario Trench, Eleu dit Leauvette; V - Passchendaele; VI - From Passchendaele to Amiens. Battles of Arleux and Fampoux; VII - The Tables turned at Amiens; VIII - The Scarpe Operation. Drocourt-Queant Line Smashed; IX - Bourlon and Cambrai;; X - Valenciennes; XI - The Last Battle at the Gates of Mons; XII - Sports and Pastimes at the Front. "All Work and No Play........."; XIII - The Armistice and the Happy Home Coming. It concludes with a List of important Service Dates, along with two Nominal Rolls, the first one for Officers, the second one for Other Ranks. Also included is a six-panel fold out map placed on the inside back cover, entitled "Map Showing Operations in which the 85th Bn. Nova Scotia Highlanders was Engaged", with Amiens, Arras, Cambrai, Lens, Lille, Mons, Valenciennes and Ypres prominently displayed on the map, along with connecting roads, railways, and canals and areas designated as "frontier", listing twelve key battles the 85th fought in, the map with an inset map at the upper right showing the particular area of northwest Europe featured on the main map. The book contains 362 pages of text, printed in black ink, on a thick newsprint paper stock, with a series of twenty-one illustrations printed in black ink and framed by green borders on a white paper stock randomly inserted at various locations, the map printed in black ink on a tissue-like paper, measuring 160 mm (w) x 238 mm (h) x 40 mm (d). It exhibits light wear on the cover, with fingermarks evident on the inside covers, however, the text and illustrations remaining unaffected. Better than very fine.
