Hardcover, maroon cloth cover, the text on the spine in gold-coloured ink, entitled "The History of the Order of the Bath and its insignia", by James Charles Risk, published by Spink & Son Limited of London in 1972, copyrighted by the author and publisher in 1972, printed in England by Robert Stockwell Limited of London. The Order of the Bath is second only to the Order of the Garter among British Orders of Chivalry. It was originally instituted by King Henry IV after he seized the throne from Richard II, and designed to cement the loyalty of the knights to his regime. Knights were created in the Tower of London on the eve of the King's coronation, and spent a long night in a vigil of prayer after taking their baths of ritual purification before being dubbed by the king. The book discusses the history of the Order and illustrates the various versions. It begins with a Table of Contents, followed by a Foreword by Sir Anthony Wagner, KGVO, D LITT dated 1972 at London, a Preface, an Acknowledgements by the author and a List of Plates. The book contains eleven chapters: I - Mr Walpole and Mr Antsis; II - Mr Antsis' New Order; III - The Order in the Eighteenth Century; IV - The Great Upheaval of 1815; V - Transition and Attempts at Reform; VI - Prince Albert Takes Charge; VII - The Late Victorian Age; VIII - The New Century; IX - Modern Times; X - The Robes and Insignia in the Eighteenth Century; XI - The Robes and Insignia after 1815. It concludes with Notes done by Chapter, a Bibliography, twenty-eight Plates and a four page Index. The book contains 224 pages, the first part of the book is text only, on a thick off-white paper stock, the remaining 54 pages consisting of the frontispiece with a photo of Queen Elizabeth II and twenty-eight plates featuring a mixture of black and white and colour photographs placed at the back of the book along with the Index, on a coated white paper stock, the previous owner with a notation on the inside front cover endpiece, measuring 185 mm (w) x 250 mm (h) x 24 mm (d). It has experienced wear and creasing on the laminated dust jacket, along with undulation on the back cover, however, the contents of the book remain unaffected. Better than very fine.
