(Ordin "Corona Romaniei"). Instituted in 1881. Multi-piece construction, Type I (1881-1941), Rare in silver gilt with red and white enamels, Romanian crown on the obverse centrepiece, identified as Italian-made as noted by the style, the date "14 - 3 - 1881" instead of the traditional "14 Martie 1881" (March 14, 1881) on the obverse centrepiece ring and "10 Maggio" in Italian instead of "10 Maiu" in Romanian (May 10) on the reverse centrepiece, measuring 42 mm (w) x 43.3 mm (h) inclusive of its laterally-pierced ball suspension, intact enamels, large rosette affixed to its original ribbon with hook and eye, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of the Crown of Romania is a chivalric order established on March 14, 1881 by King Carol I of Romania, to commemorate the establishment of the Kingdom of Romania. It was awarded as a state order until the end of the Romanian monarchy in 1947 and was revived on December 30, 2011 as a dynastic order. The order had five classes: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
