Germany, SA. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, SA-Gruppe Niederrhein, by Ernst Pack & Söhne

 (Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with tip and edges retaining factory-original sharpening. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso is maker marked with the classic Siegfried logo of Ernst Pack & Söhn, Solingen. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. Stamped onto the reverse of the crossguard is a mark of “NRH”, indicating distribution to SA-Gruppe Niederrhein. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of lacquered dark brown wood, carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h) overall. Also inset into the obverse pommel is a partially-silvered SA logo measuring 9 mm in diameter. It completes with a nickel-silver lower crossguard which is similarly marked with eight notches, and which retains a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is a mis-matched scabbard intended for issue with the Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahrkorps (National Socialist Motor Corps/NSKK) Model 1933 Service Dagger, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-silver fittings are secured to both the tip and throat, with the latter retaining a loop for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional spring catch within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and repair are evident, and include polishing of the blade which has obscured its crossgrain, re-varnishing of the blade, a chip to the reverse of the handle grip along the seam of the lower crossguard, re-painting of the scabbard shaft, and the loss of both of the throat fitting rivets. An interesting example demonstrating extensive evidence of period wear, this refurbished example remains in a very fine condition.
