Description
Description
(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A well-preserved Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the edges and tip, and with most of its original crossgrain still visible. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso is marked with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M7/68”, indicating manufacture by Lauterjung & Co., Solingen, in turn situated above a manufacture date of “1941”. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated alloy upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of lacquered dark brown wood which is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse of the pommel is a partially-silvered SA insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger culminates in a nickel-plated alloy lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel plated magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat, with the latter featuring a loop for the accommodation of a hanger, which is included and consists of a brown leather connecting to a functional metal spring clip which is maker marked with the logo of F.W. Assmann & Söhne, Solingen, along with an RZM logo and maker code of “M5/8” for the same manufacturer. The strap is also marked with an RZM logo and code “L2/371/39”, which is attributed to E.G. Leuner, Bautzen. A functional catch within the throat firmly holds the knife in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running mark to the blade, sporadic loss of nickel plating and paint to the plated fixtures and scabbard shaft, respectively, and minor wear to the hanger’s leather strap. This dagger, which remains in an exceptional state of preservation for a late-issue example, remains in an extremely fine condition.
