Description
Description
(Feuerschutzpolizei Schirmmütze für Offiziere). A Feuerschutzpolizei Officer’s visor cap, constructed of dark blue wool. The cap features reinforced side walls which are lined on the exterior with a black doeskin cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the band are trimmed with carmine piping, while an additional length of identical piping surrounds the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is an aluminum tri-colour cockade measuring 23 mm in diameter. Directly below the cockade, the centre of the cap band is pinned with an aluminum Ordnungspolizei insignia in the form of an oval oak leaf wreath overlaid by a German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 52 mm (w) x 45 mm (h). The lower edge of the cap band is flanked by mis-matched metal buttons which accommodate a chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior, and is finished in black on the obverse and in brown on the reverse. The interior is encompassed by a multi-piece brown oilcloth liner, while a brown leather sweatband surrounds the walls. The crown retains an intact transparent plastic moisture guard. An illegible handwritten owner’s name is partially visible on the left side of the sweatband, and is topped by a presumed size mark of “54”. Otherwise unmarked, the cap measures approximately 23 cm (w) x 27 cm (l) x 15 cm (h). Issues consistent with age and refurbishment are evident, and include replacement of the side buttons and later addition of the chinstrap, in addition to extensive modification of the interior of the front and crown which resulted in significant deterioration of the sweatband. This modified example remains in a very fine condition.
