Germany, Imperial. A Unique 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross Commemorative Box

(Großkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes 1870 Gedenketui). A unique commemorative box issued to veteran of the Franco-Prussian War, constructed of multi-pieces of lacquered light and dark brown wood, the lid featuring a central dark rectangular field trimmed with light panels and with dark squares adjacent to the corners, bearing a high-quality exhibition example of the 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, constructed of silvered and brass, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a silvered and ribbed frame surrounding a blackened brass core, with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1870”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, measuring 60.50 mm (w) x 59.76 mm (h) and with clips emanating from the ends of the arms for the accommodation of custom-sized rivets, the front featuring a non-functional keyhole, opening with dual functional hinges to reveal of plain interior, unmarked, measuring 24.5 cm (w) x 20 cm (l) x 6.5 cm (h), demonstrating moderate surface scratching to the wooden base with a consistent patina to the cross, a scarce and unusual example issued to a veteran of the Franco-Prussian War (possibly one of the nine recorded recipients of the official decoration) in near extremely fine condition.
