Description
Description
(Heer Schirmmütze für einen Offizier der Gebirgstruppe). A very well-preserved Heer Gebirgsjäger Officer’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. It features reinforced side walls fully lined on the exterior with a dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are trimmed with green piping, while an additional length of identical piping borders the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is an insignia consisting of an aluminum Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 25 mm (h) and retaining all original attachment prongs. An aluminum edelweiss is pinned onto the cap just below the eagle, and retains one of two original prongs. Both are in turn situated above an aluminum wreath and cockade, measuring 65 mm (w) x 40 mm (h) and retaining its original prongs. The lower edge of the cap band is flanked by pebbled aluminum buttons which retain a chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in black on the obverse and in khaki-tan on the reverse. A multi-piece beige rayon liner encompasses the interior, while a wide brown leather sweatband surrounds the walls and is perforated with an array of ventilation holes across the forehead. The crown retains a transparent plastic moisture guard which is maker marked with the log of G.A. Hoffmann, Berlin (“Berolina”). The cap measures approximately 24.5 cm (w) x 28 cm x 16 cm (h). Minor wear is visible to the base material, and fatigue is evident to the sweatband with evidence of repair or replacement demonstrated by the stitching. The cap remains in a better than very fine condition.
