Germany, Heer. A Dress Bayonet, Sawback Variant, Unmarked Example

(Heer Sägerücken-Bajonett). An interesting Heer dress bayonet, measuring 40.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 25 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the tip and lower edge, and which features a serrated “sawback” spine. Unmarked, the blade sits securely within a nickel-plated magnetic metal hilt with a hooked quillon and pommel, and with an intact red wool buffer pad covering the seam. The pommel has an insertion slot which retains a functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite compose the handle grip, and are fastened in place with dual magnetic metal rivets. Accompanying the bayonet is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft just below the throat for the accommodation of a frog. The latter is included and constructed of multiple panels of brown leather which are riveted into a loop for belt suspension. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks and tarnishing to the blade, sporadic loss of nickel plating to the hilt, some loss of scabbard paint, and the loss of the scabbard’s throat clip, rendering the bayonet loose during storage. This unusual example of a sawback dress weapon remains in a very fine condition.
