This medal bar measures 53.4 mm in length and includes: A Medal of the Academic Society of Letters, Arts and Sciences (23.5 mm x 10.3 mm); A ‘Fame Proclaims Merit’ Medal (13.3 mm in diameter); A Cross of ‘Mérite et Dévouement Français’ (17.7 mm x 12.2 mm); A Legion of Honour (22.1 mm x 15 mm).
Footnote:The Academic Society of Letters was founded in 1915 and recognises men and women of all nationalities who have distinguished themselves in the arts, performing arts, architecture, physical and medical sciences and letters. The organization ‘Le Mérite et Dévouement Français’ was founded in 1957 to encourage and recognise those who contribute to the prestige of France in the fields of culture, arts, letters, science and sport. The Legion of Honour was instituted in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is the highest French order of merit and is awarded for eminent service to the nation, civilian or military, in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight. The Third Republic government was in power from 1870 to 1940.
