(Legion D’Honneur). Instituted May 19 1802. Third Republic (1870-1951). In silver, a white enamelled Maltese Cross with ball finials, green enamelled laurel and oak wreath in each quadrant, the obverse medallion features a right facing portrait of Marianne, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE, the reverse presents two enamelled crossed flags, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed HONNEUR ET PATRIE, the cross is suspended from a laurel and oak leaf wreath, marked with AB&Cie makers mark on ring and a double struck boars head denoting a silver guarantee on the ribbon t 6 o’clock, measures 43.1mm (w) x 62.7mm (h – inclusive of wreath suspension and integral ball), weighs 27.6 grams, slightly convex, with a very thick wreath, wear to enamel on wreath and suspension wreath, lovely patina, worn on original ribbon, in very fine condition. Footnote: The Legion of Honour was proposed by Napoleon Bonaparte to the First Council, to create a reward to commend civilians and soldiers who had served the Republic, promoted republican principles and French interests. The Legion would ensure political loyalty and unity among the new French Republic.
