France, Colonial. An Order Of The Black Star, Grand Cross in Case, by Bertrand

(Ordre de l'Étoile Noire). Instituted May 10, 1896 by the King of Porto-Novo. A Grand Cross Set, featuring a silver gilt Maltese Cross with white, black, and blue enamels, adorned by green enameled laurel suspension, hallmarked on elongated suspension loop with boars head denoting French silver quality as well as marker mark for Arthus Bertrand, measuring 54.5 mm (w) x 85.1 mm (h- inclusive of laterally pierced ball suspension, on silk ribbon, toned with contact, remains near very fine. 

The Star of the Order, in silver, an eight point star with cluster of five smooth rays, the medallion superimposed presenting a white and blue enamelled Maltese Cross, with a five point black enamel star in the center, the reverse with a single vertical pin flanked by dual stays, marked with a boar’s head denoting French manufacture and small silver guarantee post 1838, makers mark of Arthus Bertrand, measures 87.9 mm (w) x 88.1 mm (h), weighs 84.48 grams, very dark patina, enamel damage to the central black star, hinge and catch functional, remains in very fine condition.

Contained with in case of issue, blue pebbled exterior wrapped the wooden frame, strong catch and push button, measures 130 mm (w) x 250 mm (h) x 43 mm (d), light wear and scuffing to lid and corners, near very fine.
