Finland, Republic. A Lapua Movement Armband

A rare Finnish Lapua Movement armband, constructed of two equal panels of blue and black cotton/rayon blended cloth securely stitched together along a central seam, bearing the partially-discernable remnant of an organizational emblem in the form of a warrior wielding a club while mounted on a bear, otherwise unmarked, measuring 19 cm (l) x 10 cm (h), demonstrating minor soiling, in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: The Lapua Movement was a Finnish nationalist organization active from the late 1920s until the early 1930s, espousing a fascist and anti-communist ideology, as well as advocating for the establishment of a Greater Finland (the latter seeking the annexation of traditional Finnish territories in Russia, Norway, and Estonia). Although it initially enjoyed mainstream backing from White Guards and other veterans of the Finnish Civil War, the movement’s violent methods largely alienated popular support. Lapua's high point came during the Peasant March of 7 July 1930, when more than 12,000 supporters gathered on Senate Square in Helsinki as a show of strength. The rally resulted in the banning of the Communist Party of Finland and a crackdown on allegedly treasonous members of parliament resulting in 23 arrests. However, these developments failed to temper the movement, which continued to violently agitate against political opponents and increasingly sought to seize power by force. These activities culminated in the February-March 1932 Mäntsälä rebellion, when Lapua attempted a coup to overthrow the Finnish government. A radio address by President Pehr Evind Svinhufvud quelled the rebellion on 2 March, and the movement was subsequently banned. The accompanying armband was worn by members of both Lapua and an adjacent youth movement, Sinimustat ("Blue-and-Blacks"), throughout this period, including at the Peasant March.
