Description
(Herzoglich Braunschweigischer Orden Heinrichs des Löwen). Instituted in 1834 by Duke Wilhelm of Brunswick. Issued 1834-1918. A I Class cross composed of silver gilt, presenting an immaculate blue enamelled Maltese cross, the obverse centerpiece in Gold presenting a crowned W in silver gilt on a silver field with smooth rays emulating from the center, the reverse centerpiece in Gold presenting the motto “IMMOTA FIDES” (Unbreakable Fidelity) on a silver field with smooth rays emulating from the center, suspended from a double loop suspension ring, measures 66.70mm(w) x 68.98mm (h- inclusive of pieshaped eyelet suspension), weighs 34.3 grams, marked on the pieshaped eyelet suspension with Imperial German half moon and crown, along with a 900 silver quality mark, and maker marked “HJ” denoting Hermann Jürgens, worn on a correct replacement sash, enamels intact, very minimal wear to gilt along edges of cross, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The Order was founded by Duke Wilhelm of Brunswick and was conferred upon individuals who distinguished themselves by rending meritorious military or civil service. Civil service included outstanding work in the fields of Art and Science.
