Braunschweig, Dukedom. An Order Of Henry The Lion, I Class Star, By Hermann Jürgens, C.1918

(Orden Heinrichs des Löwen, Bruststern zur I Klasse). Instituted 25 April 1834 by Duke Wilhelm VIII. (Issued 1908-1918). A late war or possible post war production, in frosted silver, consisting of an eight-pointed star, central red enameled medallion depicting a detailed white horse, within blue enamelled ring, in turn bordered by gilt rings and bearing raised gilt Order motto “IMMOTA FIDES” (“UNBREAKABLE FIDELITY”), topped by royal crown with a knight’s helmet in black and white enamels at the bottom, reverse with maker’s mark reading “HERM. JÜRGENS, HOFJUWLIER, BRAUNSCHWEIG”, with barrel hinge and a narrow banjo-style pinback meeting a flat wire catch, pinback with silver hallmark of “900”, measuring 83.24 mm (w) x 83.78 mm (h), weighing 70.8 grams, tarnishing of silver and enamel damage and repair to obverse medallion, in near very fine condition.

Footnote: The Dukely Order of Henry the Lion was founded by Duke Wilhelm of Brunswick on April 25, 1834. The order was conferred upon individuals who distinguished themselves by rendering meritorious military or civil service. Civil service included outstanding work in the fields of art and science.
