Belgium, Kingdom. An Order of Leopold II, Grand Officer Breast Star

(Ordre de Léopold II) a large breast star of radiating faceted and frosted rays centred by a cross pattée with ball finials, surmounted by a royal crown and enclosing a circular blue enamelled medallion bearing a rampant lion, surrounded by the inscription L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE (Unity Makes Strength), measuring 85.3 mm all around and weighing 96.9 grams, the reverse plain with a vertical pin and double stabiliser hooks for secure wear, exhibiting uniform age toning with light surface wear consistent with period manufacture while retaining strong definition and structural integrity, very fine condition.

The Order of Leopold II was instituted in 1900 by King Leopold II of Belgium and ranks as one of the country’s principal national orders. The Grand Officer grade occupies a senior position within the order’s hierarchy, worn with a breast star as a symbol of high distinction.  Breast stars of this type were awarded to senior civil and military officials as well as to foreign recipients in recognition of distinguished service to the Kingdom of Belgium.
