(Goldenes Verdienstkreuz mit Etui). Instituted December 2, 1849 by Emperor Franz Joseph. An 18kt Gold (tested) cross pattee with red enamelled arms, the center obverse presenting a “FJ” on a white enamel field within a Gold border, surrounded by the inscription VIRIBUS UNITIS (Strength Through Unity), the reverse presents 1849 in Gold on a white enamel field, in a Gold lightly pebbled border, surmounted by a delicate crown, measures 35.63mm (w) x 55.66mm (h – inclusive of surmounting crown and cross adorned integral ball), weighs 14.9 grams (without ribbon), maker marked on suspension ring denoting “V. Mayers Sohne” and “in Wien”, with the “Gemsenkopf 3A” hallmark denoting 18kt Gold, worn on an original military triangular ribbon, obverse centerpiece slightly loose, enamels intact, light contact wear, near extremely fine condition.
Footnote: This cross was founded by Emperor Franz Joseph to replace the Civil Medals of Honour. It was awarded to recognize Austrian citizens for faithfully supporting the monarchy and Austria, for long service in the civil realm, or to recognize exceptional civil service that improved public welfare.
