Constructed of silver-plated metal, bearing intricate raised floral latticework and looped squares, one side overlaid by a raised shield bearing an inscription of “WIEN 1911 / CHRISTLICH-DEUTSCHER TURNVEREIN MARGARETHEN” (“VIENNA 1911 / CHRISTIAN GERMAN GYMNASTICS ASSOCIATION MARGARETHEN”), topped by a Turnerkreuz (Gymnast Cross), the reverse overlaid by an oval void bearing a hand-engraved dedication of “DEM TREUEN TURNBRUDER / GEWIDMET ZUM HOCHZEITSFESTE 21. JULI 1912” (“TO THE LOYAL GYMNASTICS BROTHER / DEDICATED ON THE OCCASION OF HIS WEDDING 21 JULY 1912”), unmarked, measuring 10 cm (w) x 26 cm (h), demonstrating an original and unspoiled patina throughout, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The Christlich-Deutscher Turnverein (Christian German Gymnastics Association) was formed in 1889, when members of the (Austrian) Deutscher Turnverein broke away to form their own gymnastics association based around fitness within a Christian and nationalist milieu, in contrast to the secular values espoused by its parent organization.
