Description

Silver nickel cross bearing cross and Latin “Hinc Victoria” (translation: Hence Victory) in centerpiece on obverse, with reverse bearing Latin “FIDEI ET VIRTUTI’ (translation: Loyal and meritorious) and bearing “PP” “”Pius” “IX” “1867”, measuring at 39.82mm (w) x 47.56mm (H) and weighing at 13.7 grams, replacement ribbon, in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: The Mentana Cross was was instituted on November 14, 1867 by Pope Pius IX, in commemoration of the Battle of Mentana and the other battles that were fought to protect Rome against Garibaldi. The Cross was awarded to Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and all other ranks of men in the Papal Army and French Corps who participated in these battles.
