Spain, Spanish State. A Spanish War Cross, Breast Star, German-Made for Condor Legion Personnel

Constructed of a silvered alloy with gilt and multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of an eight-pointed star with pebbled rays, overlaid by a central coat of arms of Castile and León, situated within a blue enameled ring bearing a gilt inscription of “AL MÉRITO EN CAMPAÑA”, in turn overlaid a cross with its arms similarly culminating in the coat of arms of Castile and León and joined through the quadrants by a circular laurel leaf wreath, with crossed swords piercing the centrepiece, the reverse with five visible rivets securing the obverse features in position, with a raised barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch, unmarked, measuring 60.10 mm (w) x 60.62 mm (h), weighing 45.6 grams, demonstrating some loss of gilt finish to the base metal, along with flecking and surface scratching to the enamels, a German-manufactured example of superior quality and intended for issue to Condor Legion personnel in extremely fine condition.
