Description
Description
(Cruz de la Real y Distinguida Orden de Carlos III) A Grand Cross badge in 18K gold, of multi-piece construction, the eight-pointed white-enameled cross with deep cobalt-blue enameled arrowhead terminals, set between each arm with applied gilt fleur-de-lis motifs, the obverse centre featuring a finely painted enamel medallion of the Immaculate Conception surrounded by a dark blue enamel circlet, the reverse centre with blue enamel bearing the gilt motto VIRTUTI ET MERITO, suspended from a laurel wreath in gilt gold surmounted by a blue-and-white enameled bow, the suspension ring itself enameled in the colours of the order, complete with its original broad ribbed sash in pale blue with white edge stripes, measuring approximately 80 cm in length, the badge measuring 49.9 mm x 88.9 mm inclusive of the suspension ring, weighing 21.6 grams, the enamel showing a small area of damage to the prong enamel at the 3 o’clock position, otherwise retaining crisp detail and strong colour throughout, with the gold elements well-preserved and exhibiting light, even wear consistent with age.
Footnote: The Royal and Distinguished Order of Charles III was instituted in 1771 by King Charles III of Spain to reward loyalty to the Crown and exceptional civil or military merit. The Grand Cross represented the highest grade of the order and was reserved for senior figures of state, high-ranking officers, and prominent members of the nobility. During the late nineteenth century, the order remained one of Spain’s most prestigious decorations, symbolizing royal favour and distinguished service, with its elaborate design and use of precious materials reflecting the ceremonial traditions of the Spanish monarchy.
