(Medalla de Sufrimientos por la Patria). Instituted in 1814 by King Ferdinand VII. Franco’s Period issue. A miniature circular Medal in silver gilt, with obverse in blue enamels featuring a castle with the inscription SUFRIMIENTO POR LA PATRIA (Suffering for the Homeland), with an encircled chain on a white enameled background, surrounded by a gilt laurel wreath, reverse with buttonhole for attachment, measuring 16.22 mm diameter, near to mint.
Footnote: The Medal was founded in 1814 by King Ferdinand VII in recognition of all the Spaniers who suffered several casualties in the defense of Spain against the French army of Napoleon at the Peninsular War. The Medal was awarded in recognition of the military personnel who rendered outstanding services to Spain and the Crown. The Medal was suppressed in 1989.
