Description
Description
A well-preserved Slovakian Fire Brigade Commander’s helmet, constructed of a lacquered black vulcanfibre and magnetic metal composite shell. Affixed to the exterior of the crown is a T-shaped bronze frame, secured in place with nine protruding rivets. Emanating from the frame is an ornate raised comb of identical construction, flanked on each side by raised and finely-detailed laurel branches. Affixed to the peak of the helmet is a bronze Fire Brigade insignia consisting of a stylized oval rope wreath, above a ladder and crossed axes. The centrepiece of the insignia consists of a multi-coloured enameled Slovak coat of arms. It measures 70 mm (w) x 82 mm (h) overall. Flanking the helmet are medallions bearing raised lion heads, retaining in place a decorative chinstrap consisting of a black suede underlay, topped on the exterior by chainmail-style bronze, linking together in the middle with a sliding lock. The right suede strap also features a functional bronze buckle. A strip of boiled red leather covers the seam where the upper vulcanfibre shell meets the lower magnetic metal brim. Lining the brim is a gilded bronze trim, secured in place with side rivets. The interior retains a black leather sweatband, topped by 11 fingers. An integrated chinstrap also emanates from the sweatband, and is adjusted with a functional bronze buckle. The helmet is fully unmarked and measures 205 mm (w) x 290 mm (l) x 200 mm (h). Material fatigue consistent with age and use is evident, and includes oxidation of the bronze features, deterioration of the black finish of the outer shell, and fatigue of the leather features which has resulted in the loss of the drawstring formerly looped through the sweatband’s fingers. The helmet is in an overall very fine condition.
