Description
Description
A large and impressive Grand Cross breast star of the Order of Takovo, constructed in silver with a finely executed multi-rayed faceted and perforated star base. The obverse features a prominent white-enamelled cross, bordered by gilt, centred by a detailed medallion bearing the crowned royal monogram of Milan III, encircled by a deep blue enamel ring with the Cyrillic inscription “ЗА ВЕРУ, КРАЉА И ОТАЧЕСТВО” “For Faith, King and Fatherland”, surrounded by a finely enamelled green laurel wreath in high relief. The reverse presents a full convex silver backplate fitted with a long vertical broad pin, hinge, and catch assembly, the pin assembly bearing an Austrian silver control mark “A” along with “AF”, consistent with Austro-Hungarian manufacture for Serbian royal orders. Measures 89.8 mm x 99.3 mm, and weighs 71.9 grams.
The star remains in very fine condition, the silver exhibiting attractive age patina, enamel largely intact with minor enamel loss visible to the blue lettering band of the central medallion, gilt elements retaining strong colour, and the reverse toned from age. The pin assembly remains fully functional and structurally sound.
Footnote: The Order of Takovo was established to commemorate the Second Serbian Uprising of 1815 and symbolised the revival and consolidation of the Serbian nation. It developed into one of the premier awards of the Kingdom of Serbia, bestowed in recognition of distinguished civil and military merit. The presence of the crowned Milan monogram firmly places the piece within the royal context of the Obrenović dynasty. Surviving Grand Cross stars of this quality are esteemed historical insignia reflecting national pride, royal authority, and the evolution of Serbian statehood.
