Serbia, Kingdom. An Officer’s Dress Belt with Buckle, c.1905

A full-length officer’s dress belt constructed from woven silk with alternating horizontal ribbed bands in red, blue, silver, and white, edged with thin red borders. The belt features a rectangular two-piece buckle, brass-backed with a gilt-brass overlay bearing the Serbian royal coat of arms: a crowned escutcheon with a double-headed eagle, flanked by a royal mantle and topped by the Karađorđević crown. Buckle affixed to the belt with stitched loops and steel retaining bars at the end. Belt measures 90.4 cm in total length; buckle measures 63.5 mm (h) × 74.2 mm (w). Gilding mostly intact on the overlay; light surface patina on the backing and wear to the textile near the buckle area. In very fine condition overall.

This type of officer’s belt was worn with full dress uniform by officers of the Royal Serbian Army during formal ceremonies and court occasions. The richly patterned silk and regal double-headed eagle insignia reflect the Kingdom of Serbia’s monarchical symbolism under the Karađorđević dynasty. These belts were gradually phased out after the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes in 1918, making surviving examples from the independent Serbian Kingdom highly desirable and increasingly scarce.
