Serbia, Kingdom. A Photograph of King Alexander I Obrenović

A cabinet-format photographic portrait measuring 15 cm x 26 cm, printed on heavy card stock and depicting King Alexander I Obrenović in full dress uniform with medals and orders rendered in fine lithographic detail, the upper mount bearing a printed royal crown device, the lower margin signed in the plate and dated 30 III 903, the reverse displaying the ornate studio imprint of Milan Jovanovitch, Royal Court Photographer in Belgrade, featuring the Serbian royal arms and Montenegrin crest, the image showing mild age toning, edge wear, and staining consistent with handling and long storage.

Footnote: Alexander I Obrenović reigned as King of Serbia from 1889 until his death in 1903 and was the final ruler of the Obrenović dynasty, whose turbulent political life ended with the May Coup of 1903 in which he and Queen Draga were assassinated by army officers. His unpopular marriage and autocratic governance contributed to the collapse of the dynasty, after which the Karađorđević line assumed the throne; photographs produced by Milan Jovanovitch, the Royal Court Photographer, remain among the most recognizable visual records of this period in Serbian monarchical history.
