Russia, Imperial. An Icon of Christ Pantocrator, c. 1900

An exceptional and well-preserved icon of Christ Pantocrator. Presented on a gessoed wooden board, the image consists of a hand-painted tempera image of the face of Christ, with his right hand raised in benediction and fingers arranged to form his monogram of “IC XC”, and his left hand positioned to grasp an orb, symbolizing his authority. Riveted to the board is a silvered brass riza featuring the Christ’s robes and orb executed in detail, with a stylized halo highlighted in gilt. The riza is secured in place with 14 side rivets, with the base fully lined in an intact red velvet liner. A suspension loop emanates from the top edge of the reverse, while a mark of “MET” is visible on the bottom edge of the riza. Measuring 24 cm (w) x 28.5 cm (h), it demonstrates not notable damage or wear and is a striking example in extremely fine condition.
