Russia, Imperial. A Cross of Saint George, IV Class, Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878)

(Георгиевский крест, 3-й степени). Instituted February 1807 by Tsar Alexander I. A silver cross pattee, the obverse bearing Saint George on horseback slaying a dragon, the reverse bears the central cypher of the saint, the reverse of the 9 and 3 o'clock arms are numbered 46557, measures 33.8mm (w) x 41.3 mm (h), worn on a Russian pentagonal mount with the overlaid ribbon and pin fixtures on reverse,  notable contact marks, very fine. 

Footnote:  The original cross was a sub-class of the Military Order that was instituted by Catherine the Great. It was known as the "Insignia of Distinction of the Military Order". It was conferred upon non-commissioned officers, soldiers, and sailors for bravery serving with the Russian Imperial Army or Navy.
