Description

Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing a raised and leftward-facing profile of Tsar Nicolas I executed in high relief, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse bearing a raised depiction of Apollo, resting his hand on a lyre and holding a laurel wreath over busts of Tsar Alexander I and Empress Catherine II ("the Great"), flanked by symbols of war, music, and the arts, circumscribed by an inscription of “ОСНОВАЛА 1783 Г / БЛАГОТВОРНО УТВЕРДИЛЪ 1818” (“FOUNDED 1783 / GRATEFULLY APPROVED 1818”, situated above an inscription of “ПЯТИДЕСЯТИЛѢТİЕ РОССİЙ / СКОЙ АКАДЕМİИ / 1833 Г ОКТ 21” (“FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES”), the obverse engraver marked with the dedication of Heinrich Gube, St. Petersburg, measuring 65.41 mm in diameter, weighing 157.9 grams, in extremely fine condition.
