Description

Instituted April 14, 1789. A Storming of the Fortress of Ochakov, cross in bronze gilt (circa 1900 strike for museum purposes), a rounded cross with obverse inscription за службу и храбрость (For Service and Bravery) and reverse inscription очаковь бзять 6 декабря 1788 (Ochakov Taken on 6 December 1788), measures 45.3mm (w) x 50.86mm (h – inclusive of integral ring), weighs 22.2 grams, contact marks near edges, remains in very fine condition.

Footnote: The cross and medal was created on April 14, 1789 during the reign of Empress Catherine II, to commemorate the storming of the Turkish fortress of Ochakov. The Gold Grade Cross was awarded to officers who had not been decorated with the Orders of Saint George of Saint Vladimir.
