(Medalia Bene Merenti). Instituted 1876. Type II (1881-1931). In bronze gilt, the obverse presents the left facing profile of King Carol I with the surrounding inscription CAROLUS I REX ROMANIAE, the reverse presents a central inscription BENE MERENTI surrounded by a raised laurel wreath, measures 30.5mm (w) x 35.70mm (h – inclusive of integral ring), worn on original ribbon with a rare bronze gilt crown clasp denoting a personal employee of King Carol, several obverse scratches, light edge bruising, overall near very fine condition and a rare ribbon clasp.
Footnote: The Bene Merenti Medal was established by King Carol I in 1876. It was awarded to Romanian citizens in recognition of meritorious service rendered in the fields of art and science. It was later replaced by the Order of Cultural Merit in 1931.
